Approach

In my practice I strive to understand individuals and to collaborate with them towards improving their situation.  In the first couple of meetings I ask a lot of questions as well as give chances for you to talk and get a sense of what it would be like to work with me.  It is usually possible to assess the “fit” of a psychiatrist and patient within the first couple of visits.  At that point, if you decide further work is likely to be useful, you and I will talk about a plan to move forward.

Through residency and in my clinical practice I have placed an emphasis on developing my skills as a psychotherapist.  When working in psychotherapy the objective may be to address long-term patterns of living that have been causing difficulties.   Alternately, the focus may be on developing strategies to manage a new stage in life or to deal with a loss within a short-term approach.   The private professional relationship in psychotherapy can prove a valuable vehicle for facilitating growth of new, more effective approaches to relationships and many life situations.  I have extensive training in psychodynamic psychotherapy.  I also have training in dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and group work.

Within the field of psychiatry, there has been debate about when to use psychotherapy and when to use medication.  As a physician in private practice for over 23 years I am experienced in helping people manage which treatments are best for them.  Of course, medication is not always indicated, but it can be a crucial treatment to restore and/or optimize functioning and fullness of experience of life.  All medicines pose risk of side effects.  In medication work, I explain up-to-date options that are available and have open discussions about risks and benefits.

I consider myself very fortunate to be a psychiatrist- I learn from every person I come into contact with in this work.
